28.)

29th-31st Dec. 1948.

Very mild & with much sun, some drizzle. Three snowdrops now out under drawing room window. The 31st a most beautiful day & from 10 A.M. till 5 P.M. not a cloud to be seen in the sky & sun very warm. Walked from Templeogue via Willington House to Kimmage Rd West in afternoon, but saw no Ivy in flower & no wasps. On 29th while coming back from The Narrow Walls through Rathfarnham at 4 P.M. saw a ♀︎ Vespa vulgaris very torpid but just able to fly: possibly just hatched out of an old nest during mild weather or possibly one disturbed from hibernation.

29.)

1950.

1st January 1950.

A nice mild day with SW.W. wind, mainly dull, but some sun blinks in afternoon & one skiff of rain about 2 P.M. In afternoon walked to Orwell Bridge, throw [[through]] new park, back to bridge by road & down Dodder to Dartry, where picked up by Fergus O'Rourke & driven home in his car - he on holidays from School of Tropical Medicine at Liverpool.

Saw at a distance 2 Hazels in scrub on S. escarpment of Dodder at Orwell Bridge with ♂︎ catkins obviously mature & shedding pollen.

9th Jan. 1950.

Now five Snowdrops out under the drawing room window. One Yellow Crocus out by path to gate in front garden, but not open as no sun. Yellow Saxifraga apiculata in W. border almost out. Very mild the last few days, but mainly dull with some misty rain at times & over the hills.

Hazel bushes in full flower in several places during walks on 7th & 8th around Rathfarnham.

10th Jan.

A lovely mild day, but mainly dull. One Daffodil under trees at Firhouse. In afternoon took 49 bus to Old Bawn & walked back to Firhouse via Woodtown, where beside the stream below the Holy Well saw one flower on Lesser Celandine, searched for in vain in other places during previous few weeks! One "black" lamb seen between Woodtown & Firhouse.
