25.1.1950 cont.

Head now nearly all washed away & in some places at least 100 yards wide strip of coast gone since 1920 & probably three times as wide a strip since I first came this way in March 1911. Cold & cloudy all day!

26.1.50. Milder & dull all day.

30th Jan 50.

After a few very cold & grey days with strong E, SE & S winds, dry, but no snow in Dublin, heavy rain nearly all day on the 29th & until 8 A.M. on 30th.; then brilliant sun & blue sky & S.W. breeze till mid day. Yellow Sax. apiculata in W. border front garden in bud for several weeks, may now be considered to have several flowers open.

1st to 6th Feb 1950.

Alternate calm & stormy; frosty & mild, dull & sunny, dry & wet spells. Severe gale & rain on night of 2nd, but nothing too bad & some lovely clear sunny periods with frost at night. On 2nd saw some elms out near Willington House & 1st saw Alder catkins almost out by river below Rockbrook. On 7th saw a Flowering Currant with some flowers open in Orwell Rd. - where "John Marcus" O'Sullivan used to live & on 3rd saw first flower on the "Japanese Prunus", with bronze leaves; in Highfield Rd. No Almonds yet out but young tree in Kenilworth Park with large pink buds on 5th. Daphne laureola at hall door now in flower; yellow crocuses now general.

6th - 12th February 1950.

Storm & heavy rain, with a few fine intervals, but here in Dublin we only experienced one of the severe gales & that on night of 10th-11th, but very heavy rain on most days, especially on 10th, 11th, 12th.

13th Feb.

Brilliantly sunny with cold NE wind, after a wet night, till 2 P.M., then wind went W-NW & clouds covered the sun till sunset. Took 2 P.M. bus to Ballyboden & walked up Military Road & down hill to Woodtown & so back to Fir House & bus home at Charleville House. Met a large ♀︎ frog in gutter of roadway just S. of Firhouse making slow way towards nearest stream about 50 yards farther along – hope she got there safely. Very cold wind.

14th Feb.

Daisy saw a frog in part garden of Mr. Henry's in Westfield Rd. The young Almond tree in Kenilworth Park with many buds but none open. Still cold & the hills above 1,200 ft. snow covered, those above 1,500 ft. very white; but though plenty of rain in Dublin no snow has fallen since early in December.

15th Feb.

S.W. gale & great rise temperature, with jam over hills & rain blowing in the wind all day, though sun nearly out at times; heavy rain in late afternoon. Very mild. One flower out on the Almond in Kenilworth Park & buds on several Daffodils & on Flowering Currant in our back garden.
