16th Feb 1950

Very mild & nearly all sunny till 3 P.M. when a shower over hills & subsequent clouds cut off sun & temperature fell considerably. Sun & air really warm in forenoon & many flowers out on the Almond in Kenilworth Park & a few on one near foot of Westfield Road.

In afternoon took 54 Bus to Crumlin Cross & walked via the Greenhills, Tymon Castle & Balrothery back to Templeogue & Fortfield Rd. bus - to pick up the weeks eggs. Had to fight our way against a severe southerly gale from bus to Tymon Castle, being quite halted & knocked about by it several times! Saw flowers on Coltsfoot in ditch on the Templeogue-Tallaght road just S.W. of the Poddle River bridge

18-19th Feb.
Still mild, but heavy rain late on 19th, foretold return of colder weather.

20th Feb.
Fine forenoon with N.W. wind, but on wind turning N.E. about 2 P.M. a jam formed & very heavy rain fell for two hours. First purple Crocus out in front garden

21st Feb.
A gloriously sunny day after slight front at night & big display of Aurora - due to large sun-spot. Chionodoxa & a white polyanthus Narcissus in flower in front garden - outside dining room wall.

First flower in Benevenagh Saxifraga oppositifolia in front garden. Saw a creamy gull in Belgrave Square like a juvenile Iceland Gull.

25th Feb.

After a wet & +/- mild week, weather turned cold on night of 23-24 & heavy rain, sleat, hail, & even snow showers fell in Dublin on 24th forenoon (day of Ireland v. Scotland rugby international which Ireland won by 21 points to mil); snow on high hills at noon! The afternoon of 24th gradually cleared & sun broke through about 5 P.M., though wind still E.-NE., by 8 P.M. clear & frosty, & hard frost on this night of the 24th-25th - probably the hardest frost of the winter here in Dublin.

25th opened very bright & sunny. Sax. oppositifolia in back garden with several flowers open on both Benevenagh & Snowdon plants in west border, but all the small flowered form. Pale blue Hyacinth in front garden under dining-room window with first flower open. Miss Odlum's blue Scilla out in front garden also.

Still fine in afternoon when Marcus Graham & I walked to Milltown Station & home via golf links & Orwell Bridge.

Another lovely sunny day after a night's frost. ♀︎ Salix cinera in back garden with catkins open!

2nd March.
