19th March 1950. A nice day with much hot sun after nearly 24 hours rain. On going down garden found one of the frogs beside the tin dish at motor-house door in which one spawned last year! From its size & distended body, I suspect it is a ♀ on a laid last year, & probably same one as laid last year, but the eggs never developed although water left in the dish.

♂ Salix cinerea at S.E. corner of motor-house hanging over into Ellis's garden with a few catkins out. Salix nigricans & S. arbuscula(?) from Scotland, & Faris's S. nigricans cuttings, all coming into leaf.

Carex montana flower spikes well up & nearly in flower.

20th March. A lovely mild sunny forenoon after more rain during night; mainly dull in afternoon, with jam. & rain between 4 & 5 pm when wind went from W to E. Fime later when E. wind dropped. In afternoon had visit from L. H. Bonaparte Wyse - the entomologist & descendant of Napoleon I am told - but who the ♀ ancestor was I have never been informed. He is now living with his nephew at Corbally West, near Tramore, Co. Waterford

In forenoon saw one small ♀ Bombus in back garden - I think B. jonellus. Also found a ♀ Vespa vulgaris in back porch trying to get out!
