23rd May 1950.

After some rain at night, a warm day with much hot sun up till 2 P.M., then dull & heavy rain in several places around but none where we were! Called for by Dr. C.D. Day at 11 AM. and driven to Bere Wood, 1 1/2 mile E. of Bere Regis. Arrived there at 11.40 & left at 4:30! Spent day sweeping, where possible, birch, oak, Spanish chestnut, Mercury, Wood Spurge, &c., but much of the oak-wood destroyed & replanted with Conifers, & where not replanted the removal of larger trees has let in the light & so brambles &c. have grown up & sweeping very difficult, except here & there or along sides of the sides. Nevertheless a beautiful wood & full of good insects.
