144.)

2nd July 1950.

A very nice day but almost entirely dull after 11.30 A.M. in Glen of Imaal. Left home at 10.30, Daisy, Marcus Graham & I, with intention of spending day on Lugnacullia. Arrived at Coan at head of Glen of Imaal at 11.45, by which time N. wind (in Dublin) had dropped & a "jam" formed over Lug & spreading out across the rim: therefore decided to spend day collecting around Coan &c. No rain fell during the day, but almost entirely dull, mainly calm but every now & then a breeze would arise & blow for a few minutes & then die down again: at times quite cool, but often warm & the few bursts of sun very warm. Left Knickeen at 5.50 & home at 7.5 P.M. (via Donard). Roads in the Glen very bad!!

Collected in 5 areas as follows:-

1 = Salix, Alder, Birch, Hazel, &c. scrub along course of the Little Slaney about 1/2 mile above the ford at Coan

2 = Birch-alder plantation about 1/4 to 1/2 mile NE of the ford at Coan.  2.0 till 3.20 P.M.

Then drove back to Seskin school & N. across R. Slaney to Knickeen (near the ruins of Leitrim Barracks!) to Coll. in 3 areas just S. of the cross roads

3 = Old wood (not replanted with conifers) oak, alder, &c. W. of road; & some old Lime trees E. of road, 1/4 mile S. of cross roads. 3.30 - 4.0 P.M.

{4 = Alder plantation at SW. angle of cross roads. Alnus incana & glutinosa. 4.30 - 5.15 P.M.

{5 = Birch (& some Alder) plantation at SE angle of cross roads, opposite 4.  5.15 - 5.40 P.M.

{- specimens taken here in earlier years mostly labelled "Leitrim", Glen of Imaal! AWS.
