155.) 7.7.50, cont. In evening, 7.0 P.M., found a freshly emerged Swallow-tail Moth (sambucaria) in back garden & made the following sketch of its resting position for Marcus Graham. [[image]] 9th July 1950. A fine day after a jam with showers in forenoon! After a fine night, strong S.W. wind from dawn to breakfast, then jam formed as a SE. wind drove back SW. Left home in car about 10.40 with cloud drift from SW. & much blue sky to W. At Rathcoole ran into strong S.E. wind & saw ahead a belt of rain coming down from the hills. At Kile ran into a "line squall" with heavy rain, which passed through & by the time we reached the Aqueduct where Grand Canal crosses R. Liffey, S. of Sallins, road & vegetation dry. Stopped therefore to collect in lee of hedge about 1/2 mile E. of Digby Bridge, but heavy shower from 156.) SW. immediately drenched everything & stopped further collecting. As wind now back to SW & strong & blue sky to W., drove on to plantation 1/4 mile E. of Landenstown Ho. & lock, on canal, where stayed till 5.15 PM. By 1.30 strong wind had dried up vegetation & soon after blue sky spread from W. & we had a lovely sunny afternoon, but wind SW. & strong. Very warm. Collected in 4 areas as follows: - all Co. KD. 1. Along hedge & ditch, 1/4 mile E. of Digby Bridge, on S. side of Grand Canal. 11.30-11.45 AM 2. Along ditch between plantation & canal, 1/4 mile E. of Landenstoun Ho.: mostly off alders, bramble, &c. Noon - 1.0 P.M. 3. In plantation S. of canal & road, & along N. & W. sides of field (grazing this year!) at same place 1.30-4.0 P.M. 4. Same as 2, but also includes edge of canal, as well as along parallel drains. 4.15-5.15 P.M. Taken at 1. 1/2 mile E. of Digby Bridge, Co. KD.
