17th May 1951.

A lovely day, but with strong cold NE breeze. All sunny. Left home at 11 AM & drove to Greystones where called on John Palmer & Una for a few minutes & then drove on to Newcastle station & walked south along the Murrough where had lunch about 12.45. After lunch walked south to Five Mile Point & then along Grange lane across the marshes & back to car again. Considerable amount of the Murrough pebble bank washed away S. of Newcaslte station, several yards wide in places & all the former fringing vegetation gone - no Horned Poppy seen at all, & no Sea Holly till near Five Mile Point less & less damage, done during the winter storms.

Tried sweeping outside railway before lunch & a few Hymenoptera taken, but wind blowing down coast gave no shelter & so few insects out. Also tried sweeping in lane (= 2) but only 8 hymenoptera taken & a few bees seen but nothing of interest.
