30th Sept. 1952. After a wet night, rain continued until midday, but afternoon dry & with considerable sun; strong NE. wind; cold.

Drove in afternoon to Decy Lock on Royal Canal & walked W. along canal to Carton & back, the tow path now nearly overgrown in place. Saw many Ich. on leaves of oak, &c., in hedge & 2 bumble bees (Bombus agrorum [male]  & Psithyrus campestris [male] dandron). & several Speckled Wood Butterflies. Did not collect. Saw Swallows on camel. Before going and in can took a Sigathylus flimicata in kitchen window - possibly escaped from [[?]] tonight in to kindle the fire.

1st-3rd October 1952. Fine, dry & cold, wind NW. until noon on 3rd. Sham [[shame]] it went cast, after a long  sunny forenoon & afternoon mainly dull, with mostly fog in evening. Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly in front garden on 2nd & 3rd, rather worn; Small White on 2nd; Bombus agrorum 1 [male]) on 2nd, wasps in hundreds! On afternoon of 3rd took 2.20 bus to Whitechurch & walked up lane on Wide of Kilmashogue & black to catch 4.25 bus from Tabradden. Collected a few hymenoptera with sucker in lane on way up but mainly dull & fur insects out [[?]] wasps.

3.10.52, cont. Lane on Wide of Kilmashogue, to DU. Bumble bee heard, not seen. Wasps abundant - at ring. +?
Pltylabius vitratorius ? , ant. 38; small + dark!
Mesochorus sp. , small, pale species; ant. 24.
Opius irregularis ♀: not mtd.

4th Cot. 1952. George arrived from Belfast in his new "A.40" Austen car + after lunch took us via Britta to Ballinascorney, where we left the car at upper quarry (+ 1,000 ft.) + walked up to the col between Butter Mountain + Seechan 1 alt. of col. feet ). A lovely forenoon, but afternoon mainly cloudy, though wind W. NW. all day.
Did not collect.

5th Oct. 1952. Sunday. Brilliant sun all day: wind light westerly: cold, except in sun. After lunch George drove us to Glending, near Blessington, + I collected on the 60 Wicklow side for an hour + a half, by sweeping ash, oak + undergrowth. Small hymnoptera [[occurred?]] in almost incredible number in sheltered places.
