A. sp. ? (?♂︎), ant. 36: looks like small eros Nix.; but has virtually no trace of sternauli: possibly a freak! - put in box with eros, &c.

Garden, 14 Clareville Rd., Harold's Cross, Dublin. 1953.

First Crabro varius seen in garden during hot sun on 24th May.
Spilomena troglodytes seen on 25th May. 
Vespa norvegica: a worker seen licking something at base of leaves of Juniper in back garden after rain on 27th May.  Others seen on following days.  These the only workers seen so far.


1st June 1953. 

Wind N. strong & cooler than lately, with three showers in early afternoon.  R.L. Coe (Diptera, Brit. Museum) came to lunch & is staying in Dublin for a couple of weeks to collect Syrphids and Pipunculids.  In afternoon he & I walked to Orwell Bridge & down R. Dodder to Dartry & collected along river path & on the "inch" or flat below Dartry Ho. recently taken over by the Dublin Corporation as a park & playing field. 

Swept Alexanders, Cow Parsnip & Anthriscus sylvestris &c. for an hour, but vegetation very wet after showers.
