22nd. June 1953.

A very hot, fine sunny day, with no wind, soft & warm, after a wet day. Left home at 11.30 AM., with J.P. Brunker, & drove to Newbridge, Co. KD. Left car on Newbridge-Rathangan road 1 mile N.W. of Newbridge & walked SW. 1 mile to the great marsh which drains N.W.-wards into the Slate River & between Grange Hill & Hill of Allen & feeds also the Grand Canal. In this marsh a couple of weeks ago on a D.N.F.C. excursion a member (Mr. Powell) found the Fly Orchis (O. muscifera) & Brunker wanted to see it, but did not know where to look & thought it rather too late in season.

At any rate he did not find it. The marsh very rich in sedges & these include acres of Cladium, Schoenus, Carex paludosa, hudsonii, goodenowii, disticha, hirta, glauca (on dry margin), stellulata, lepidocarpa, ovalis. Also seen more Eriophorum, latifolium, Stellaria uliginosa in the marsh & Henbane outside a rabbit burrow on the moraine N. of the marsh & 1/8 mile N. of the railway. Swept a few insects in lane & fields N. of the marsh & many in various places at E. end of the marsh. Small hymenoptera (Chalcids & Proctos) in very great quantity but Braconids not common as sun probably too hot.
