23rd August 1953. A warm, soft, day with S. ly winds, seen after the coolest evening and night for some time; it was raining for most of the day, but with flashes of sunshine. In forenoon drove via Brittas to the quarry S of Ballinascorney Gap to get stone chips & for Scottish plants & home at noon for lunch. On arrival at the quarry (+1,000 ft.) saw a lovely fresh Painted Lady Butterfly on flowers of Cnicus arvensis - the first of this species seen during the year.
