24th Sept. 1953.

A lovely day, with much hot sun, after a heavy dew & misty morning.  In afternoon drove up E. side of Glenasmole & left car at the second road on left leading over to Glencree.  Then walked up this road for a couple of miles & to about 1,200 ft.:  sat for a bit to enjoy the view beside a small swampy stream filled with Ranunculus lenormandi (in flower as usual).

Saw several Small Tortoiseshell Butterflies, many very worn Bumble Bees (agrorum, lucorum, & the ♂︎ lapidarius) at flowers of purple, & white, Cnicus palustris, a great colony of Halictus rubicundus, ♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎ all very fresh, on roadside at ca. 1,100 ft.  Tried sweeping rushes, &c., along roadside but only the following hymenoptera taken.

Slope E. side of Glenasmole, at 1,100-1,200 ft.  3 till 4 P.M.

Phygadeuon crassicornis Grav. rather than mixtus Bridgman - Possibly nanus Grav.: see Morley!  ♀︎, ant. 20.  With spiral segmentation of agdomen;  stout rather than clavate antennae, red on basal half.
Proctos  3.  (Phenoserphid ♀︎ & 2 minute "wingless" spp.)  None mtd.
NB.  Only the Hemiteles mounted.


25th Sept. 1953.

Saw a ♀︎ Spathius exarator in motor house, 14 Clareville Rd., when feeding the snails:  and about 2 weeks ago killed in mistake for a Psocid a ♀︎ Theocolax formiciformis in house.

26th Sept. 1953.

A fine day, with some sunny intervals;  no rain in Dublin or at Manor Kilbride till we left, but Glenasmole filled with misty rain as we drove home at 5.15 P.M.

In afternoon drove to Manor Kilbride (Daisy & I) & walked up through remains of beech & oak wood to top of Dowry, later collected in the triangle plantation between the three roads as often before.  Collected in three areas, as follows:-

1 = Upper wood (above road from Brittas to Athdown:  3.0-3.30. & the insects taken here labelled "DOWRY".  Insects plentiful!
2 = S. end of triangle, between the roads.  3.30-4.0 P.M.
3 = Middle of triangle.  4.0-5.20 P.M.  Very few insects!
