At tea-time a white butterfly of sorts flew across the front garden: it appeared "large" - See opp. page: 20th April!, but by the time I got to the window it had vanished. This is the first "white" I have seen in Dublin so far thisyear. Early Purple Orchid with flower spike ready to open, a second appearing & a third not yet visibl: this from near Torr Head, Co. Antrim in April 1913.

19th & 20th April, 1954.

Both dry, but 19th entirely dull & 20th partly sunny, wind SE to S., cold. During sunny spell in afternoon of 20th a ♂︎ Large White Butterfly seen in back garden & this confirms my impression that the White seen on 18th was P. brassicae & not P. napi!

It is curious that no Small Whites have yet been seen in the garden. Ranunculus auricomus with first flower open in back garden; also Arctostaphylos uva-ursi from Agnews Hill.

21st & 22nd April.

Both entirely sunny! Very hot sun, but very chilly E. wind. S.P. Dance of R.A.F. arrived to stay & discuss Pisidia &c. he being just returned from 2 1/2 years service in the Canal Zone, Egypt.
