Of the other plants the Caren paniculata and Carex Caerigala seem little affected and both as numerous as before, but the swamp & most of the trickle from springs above it now dry or in freshly cut channel. In one place - the old Alder swamp - 100 feet above the glade & where springs are very numerous there has been little change & we saw a dozen or more specimen of Cephalanthera ensifolia in flower and looking quite happy, while the spruce needlings planted on top of small mound of earth - to keep their feet dry - looked very sick indeed. The foresters appear to have had much trouble in keeping down the oak, birch & other native species in the new plantation for fear they would kill the dear Conifers. It was a nice dry day with some hot sun and the wood was sheltered from the same thing cold northern wind, which has been blowing for some time. On way down the wood swept - Vaccinius Oak, Birch and from 12 noon till 1.15 P.M. = 1. After lunch by the river swept along riverside as far as the Crony Burn and then back up through the wood to the car at about 4 PM. = 2. Left home at 4:30, via Ballylusk & Ashford and home at 6.15
