28th May 1954.

A most disappointing day after a fine night & lovely morning. At 11 AM. just as we were about to start out for the hills the wind went from W. to SE. & a jam with torrential rain & thunder formed over the hills & spread slowly westwards. Therefore we drove westwards towards the vanishing blue sky & caught up with it at Deey Lock on Royal Canal, beyond Leixlip. After ten minutes sweeping along canal from the lock to Mr. Mitchell's plantation the jam & rain reached us, so we retreated to the car & drove on to where the Rye Water leaves Carton demesne & had lunch, during which time little or no rain fell, but as I finished lunch & stepped out of the car to sweep the roadside S. of the bridge the rain recommenced & so after one sweep we turned & came home through heavy rain as far as Clondalkin, by which time the sun was coming out over Dublin & no further rain fell till 6.30 PM. During afternoon collected a few insects in back garden, 14 Clareville Road, Harold's Cross. Much warmer than of late & very hot sun at times.

Taken at 1. Royal Canal, E. of Deey Lock, Co. KD. 12.30 Noon.
