That he welcomed the U.S. Forces, under General Burnside, when he captured New bern, in March 1862; & that he co-operated actively and efficiently, with the U.S. Sanitary Commission, in laboring to preserve the health of the U.S. Soldiers;
That he continued, for more than two years, to visit the prisons & Hospitals in New bern as an unpaid agent of the U.S. Christian Commission, in order to instruct and benefit the prisoners, the sick & the wounded; see Letter of Capt. Denny.)
That, acting under the direction of Maj. Genl. Peck, Commdg the Dept. of N.C. he became Superintendent of Schools in N.C., & succeeded in establishing Free schools for white children. - This labor was gratuitous ;
That, in July 1864 he was commissioned by the U.S. Govt. as Captain & A.Q.M., & assigned to duty in New bern N.C., where he has continued to act as Depot Quartermaster, up to the present time;
