General,

Having seen that, by S.O. No. 23d. W.D., you are appointed to the Office of Asst. Comr. for the Bureau of R.F.men & A. Lands, in North Carolina, - I beg leave, very respectfully, to request that you would be so good as to nominate me to the situation of Superintendent of Schools under the Bureau, - For the following reasons, viz.

1.  I have been long, a resident citizen of this State, before the war, always holding - places of honor & responsibility, - First, as President of Graham College, Alamance, Co. N. C., - & latterly as Principal of Newbern Endowed Academy & Normal School;

2nd  I have been always a zealous & devoted - supporter of the Union Cause, & have suffered severely from the action of the Rebel Genl. Hill, who seized my Academy & destroyed my valuable school.

3rd  I welcomed the U.S. Forces under Genl. Burnside, in 1862. & Co-operated actively & efficiently, with the U.S. Sanitary Comn., in laboring to preserve the health of the U.S. Soldiers.
