4th I continued, for more the two years, to visit the prisons in Newbern, as an unpaid Agt of the U. S. Christian Comss - in order to instruct and comfort the prisoners - of both sides.

5. I was appointed by Maj. Genl. Peck, at the special request of Brig. Genl. T. N. Palmer, - Superintendent of Schools in N.C., & this order has not been revoked - S.O. No. 32 Nov. 11 - 1864. Dept. of N. C. - See Copy inclosed printed. 

6th [[crossed out]] That [[/crossed out]] In July 1864, I was commissioned by the President as Capt & A.Q.M., & have served, with high approval, until the date of my "Honorable Muster Out" since which time I have settled up all my Quartermaster papers, & been paid in full. see B. 7th The policy of the U. S. Government is to appoint, when eligible, Resident Citizens of this State to Public Offices in it - I therefore, humbly represent that I have some claims on the position to which I aspire & I respectfully beg that you will be so very good as to examine my papers, &, if satisfied, nominate me to the place of Supt. of Schools for N. C. under the Bureau of F.men &c.
