and there were many others not in sight probably. The kept crossing in front of the steamer all the time. Saw a few Great Blue Herons. Kingfishers were quite numerous.

June 22, Saturday.

Today we went on an excursion up the river. Edmund and I kept a list of the birds we saw. Black Terns were moderately abundant. In a piece of ground under a drawbridge were a few Bronzed grackle's. Herons of both species were abundant. A pair of Great Blue's

kept flying along and lighting in the trees in front of the steamer for a long distance.
On the Minnesota River I saw a Kingbird fed its young as the steamer passed. The nest was on a dead limb hanging over the water.

Blackbirds and Bobolinks were quite common. We saw them in damp meadow mostly. For the first time I saw a Roughwinged Swallow. It came skimming along just above the water all alone. I knew by the uniform color of the under parts. We saw two. It seemed a trifle less
