stayed under for half a minute. It swam with its wings and feet. Just its tail and head showed above water. While diving it swam with its wings and left its feet sticking straight out behind. Sometimes its went down and left its feet sticking out of the water. We took it out of the water and it ran and hid in the grass.

A ways farther on we came to slough that we could not cross. Terns were very thick here. They had their nests across the slough.

Then we turned back. Found a Wren's nest in a tree but could not reach it.

June 26, Wednesday.

Last night at 11:10 we started for home. It grew light at 2 o'clock this morning. I kept track of all the birds that I saw. When the train stopped at stations I could hear Chewinks and many other birds singing.
 
Mourning Doves were in sight most of the time. They sat on fences and trees and flew along with the train. Red-winged Blackbirds were very common. The land was quite wet and marshy.

Crows were flying in all directions. Saw a Quail in the ditch by the track and
