October 24, Thursday. 

This afternoon in Baraboo I went over by the railroad track after school. I was sitting down when I heard the clear whistled notes of a Northern Shrike. They were very difficult to describe They had a very clear sound and some were almost bell-like. It flew out of some bushes to a tree and then curved up to a perch just as it had dropped down when leaving its former one. The flight was flapping, straight and steady. It hopped up through the tree until the top was reached [[?went]] it gave the notes again.

The Tree Sparrows knew of its presence very evidently for it was almost impossible to flush them and they were silent.

October 25, Friday.

This morning after breakfast I was standing by Hall's barn in Baraboo when a flock of about 65 Rusty Blackbirds flew over. They just missed the tops of the trees. The flight was steady and at times undulating They sang and called in a grand medley. The song was bubbling and flutelike but was neither clear nor well-sustained. Its rollicking effect was rather
