fall growth of grass. They were all afraid of the train except one. He sat in the grass and watched it go by. He was crouched down ready to start in an instant and looked at it fearfully. The others flew to a freshly plowed strip in the next field and lit again. There were about 20 of them. When they lit they let thier feet hang in some cases and sailed for about 20 feet before lighting. Only a few did this.

October 31, Thursday

This morning at Halls in Baraboo as I sat by my

window studying three House Sparrows lit on the top of the porch about four feet away. They seemed rather wet and drooped their tails. One male had his feathers all puffed out. There was a railing around the top of the porch with spikes about six inches high projecting from it. He sat in between two of them. A female lit on one of the spikes a little beyond him and turned around on it.
 
This seemed to anger him and he flew at her and knocked her off and then chased her off through the trees. Art Hall rapped on the window and the remaining one
