In Voll's Woods 2:10 P.M. Dec. 1, 1901 Watched a Hairy Woodpecker for some time. [[marginalia]] I sex [[/marginalia]] It was a male. It hunted around near the ground on logs stumps and fresh cut trees. [[marginalia]] habits [[/marginalia]] It did not hammer like the Downy but simply dug out all that it found. It was quite noisy [[marginalia]] notes [[/marginalia]] and gave its loud note at least once in a minute. While digging out a grub every [[?]] stroke about it would look up for a tenth of second for Hawks. When it was behind a log from me it bobbed its head up and down like [[marginalia]] actions [[/marginalia]] a jack-in-the-box. It did not seem to feed any on live trees. It was very restless and [[?rarely stopped for an instant except to pull at a crooked feather. It would like on the butt of a stump give it a glance dig out a grub and then on to the next one. It would detect all the grubs on a stump at a glance. Once it went inside of a hollow stump. It would look for Hawks before it flew. Finally it flew to a tree then higher in another and then went across [[marginalia]] flight [[/marginalia]] the river. Its wings made a rattling noise.
