Voll's Woods 2:30 P.M. Dec. 1, 1901. Watched a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches for some time. They did not like to have me around at first. [[marginalia]] notes [[/marginalia]] They climbed around angrily and gave notes like like [[underlined]] er er erer er er [[/underlined]] with variations for about 5 minutes. The notes were high pitched and nasal and were given with great force. [[marginalia]] actions [[/marginalia]] They flitted their wings nervously while going along horizontal limbs. [[marginalia]] notes [[/marginalia]] But soon they became reconciled to my presence and went on with their feeding occasional notes like [[underlined]] ick [[/underlined]] or [[underlined]] eck. [[/underlined]] They never became separated very far. The male made most of the noise. [[marginalia]] feeding habits [[/marginalia]] They fed on the elms principally and got insects from the bark. If one got a grub while I was too close it would fly with it to another tree. They kept a sharp outlook for Hawks. Generally bending the head up to look while hanging head down. They probed for food occasionally hammering out a grub
