Feb. 1, 1902

[[marginalia]] deception[[/marginalia]] I could hear them calling and thought they were about 10 rods off. I stopped for a minute and there was one not 10 feet away.
[[marginalia]] tameness [[/marginalia]] It did not seem at all afraid.
[[marginalia]] motion [[/marginalia]] It ran through the snow with a waddling motion like a duck.
[[marginalia]] food [[/marginalia]] Sometimes it sunk its body clear down and ate seeds of ragweed and pig weed that stuck above the snow.
[[marginalia]] number [[/marginalia]] There were three altogether. They kept up little notes all the time.
[[marginalia]] tracks [[/marginalia]] Their tracks looked as if made with bobs for their feet dragged. When I tried to approach closer they would run away faster
