In Volls Woods. 9:30 A.M.

Feb. 16, 1902
[[marginalia]] weather [[/marginalia]] It was snowing a little this morning though the sun shone. It was not very cold. Watched a Female Downy Woodpecker for a while. Another of the same sex lit near it and perched on a limb.
[[marginalia]] note [[/marginalia]] It gave a chattering note but the other paid no attention to it.
[[marginalia]] action of bill [[/marginalia]] It tapped very fast. When sideways to me I could not see the downward stroke of the bill. when about half way up on the upward stroke it went slower so that it could be seen. When back towards me I could see the head go.
[[marginalia]] position [[/marginalia]] It did not seem to care if it was back down but never went head down.
[[marginalia]] friends [[/marginalia]] It hunted in company with another Downy a Brown Creeper and two Nuthatches.
