Mulleins. A Downy Woodpecker was hammering grubs out of a big stalk. This will a good place for winter birds.

Saw a flock of about 25 Purple Finches. They seem to like the dead tops of trees to perch in. Sunday morning I will come down and watch I cannot this morning as the boys wish to move around. The great length of their tails struck as peculiar.

Found a nest of ampelis cedrorum that almost completely composed of sheepswool.

August 17, Sunday.
This morning after breakfast went down in the fields. The swallows were around as usual. Today they were down near the river.

Saw a Song Sparrow with a light yellowish brown tail and another with scarcely any tail at all.

In the edge of the corn field I scared up 6 half grown Bobwhites. They had been taking a dust bath. A little farther I looked over a bush and there were about a dozen young Quail less than a
