April 29, Wednesday.

This morning I heard a Brown Thrasher sing and a Spotted Sandpiper flew over.

After dinner I went over into the River Woods.
  
Saw a single White-crowned Sparrow.  White-throats were plentiful.

Water-Thrushes of both species were singing. 

By the Railroad Bridge I was just leaving the woods

so dead sick that I could hardly walk when I heard a harsh mewing [[underline]] peet [[/underline]] giving in the tone of a Cat-birds mew. I placed the bird in a brushpile and I knew at once for a Blue-gray gnatcatcher my first specimen. It kept it wings droopped and sometimes cocked its tail above its back giving it a very mocking birdlike look. It made sallies after insects straight up into the air, caught them with a loud snap of the bill and then pitched down again. Then it flew into a tree and I lost it although I heard its note once or twice afterwards.
