last night and an osprey circled around over us to look at us and then went b[[strikethrough]]l[[/strikethrough]]ack in the woods. A Mallard flew up at the first shot.

I shot a female Yellow-headed Blackbird. We hunted for their nests but found none. Long-billed Marsh Wrens were common & we found several nests. A good many were empty. The birds frequently flew up a few feet but in the air and then dropped back singing.

I heard some queer flycatcher notes but was unable to secure a specimen. They were either Traill's Flycatcher or its subspecies, alnorum. They kept around the clumps of willow & alder. I shot one but could not find it. Their note was [[underlined]] whit-see-a [[/underlined]] or simply whit.

In a marsh meadow, I shot a Swamp Sparrow. It flew into a bush and I thought for a minute it was a Long-billed Marsh Wren.
