This morning it ^[[was]] cloudy and later in the forenoon it rained. Went down near Baraboo after some [[strikethrough]] Grasshopper [[/strikethrough]] ^[[clay-colored]] Sparrows. Near Tuttles I shot two. It was too dark and cold for them to be singing. Those which I shot were in a little patch of undergrowth. They were hard to find. Near Lyons I heard another singing and getting out found a number of them. They all sat about four feet from the ground while singing. I got two more here.

July 7, Thursday.

258. Buteo platypterus. A. Wetmore. River Woods North Freedom, Wis, iris amber-brown, cere yellow. bill black. rami greenish yellow. base of bill slate. tarsus yellow. Length 15 7/8 wing 11 1/8 tail 6 3/16 [[female symbol]] ad. stomach contents beetles, grasshoppers & the bones of a mouse. 

259. Hirundo erythrogaster. A. Wetmore. Will Dickie's Marsh, North Freedom, Wis, iris pale brown. bill black tarsus brown. Length 5 3/4 wing 4 5/16 tail 2 1/8 [[female symbol]] im. stomach contents insects.

260. Poecetes gramineus. A. Wetmore. R.R. track near Iriquois Iron Mines, North Freedom, Wis, iris brown. culmen black. mandibular rami rosy white. rest of bill slaty white tarsus flesh color. Length 6 1/8 wing 3 3/8 tail 2 3/8 [[male symbol]] ad. stomach contents insects & seeds.

This morning in the River woods I found a pair of Broad-winged Hawks. I followed them around for a long time. They gave a note like [[underlined]] tse-he-e-e [[/underlined]] continually. They kept so in the tree tops among leaves that I could not get a shot. Finally one
