note on the wing. All of these were feeding on the soft mud banks which only projected a short distance out of the water.

I also found six or eight Killdeer. They did not seem at all afraid of me in the boat nor did any of the others except the Spotted. The Solitaries were especially tame. Frequently I passed within twenty feet of them.

I rode in on a load of hay and as we crossed the bridge a duck swam out from the bank and swam up stream quickly.  I shot it and when I got it ashore it proved to be a Hooded Merganser the first one I ever saw.  It looked much like a Lesser Scaup Duck on the water.
