were in the grass when there was from six to eighteen inches of water. They generally flew about a hundred feet or less before lighting again. This bird was wholly unexpected. 

I came to a clear place and saw a large Duck sitting on it, swimming around a little and nervously nodding its head. I took a long sitting shot and wounded it so that it could not fly good against the wind. It lit again and going over I shot it as it got up. it was a pintail. It flew fast and made a good shot.
