several times but always saw me. I fixed up a blind and both bunches came back but I got nothing. The two dropped in about dark and I could not find them.

A Northern Shrike came and hovered over me but when I changed the load in the gun it flew away. It hung above me for over a minute. I lit in a tree where some Red-wings were but it did not attack them. They were afraid of it and kept away. When they flew it flew after them but they dodged it. I also saw it fighting in a tree with a Bluejay. The Jay did  not like to give up but was forced to.

In the evening the air was full of Wilson Snipe and a sprinkling of woodcock. I heard the tremulous whistle given by the Snipe for the first time in my life. They gave it while flying over. Both birds called incessantly.

Some strange sparrows were around, but I got no shots. Everything was quiet until almost dark when the wind died down. Then Sparrows were flying around everywhere. Once one lit in the bush were I was hid. Altogether it was a scene of life. I did not see the birds as much as I heard them. All were restless - under the instinct of migration.

The Mallards wings whistled when they flew. Killdeer flew over
