Ring-bill
May 5, 1955

I.

May 5, 1955

11:30 a.m. Pelican Island. Dog Lake. Clear. Little Wind. Sunny and hot. Am in what I think is Ring-bill colony. Gulls shy of blind. Not yet down near blind 11:37. Panic after panic. Starting to settle 11:41.

Notice one thing during the miscellaneous fighting after they first come down. Lot of HDTT's preceded by very long and conspicuous O's (varying to L). These O's must be relatively high intensity; and relatively aggressive (as the performing bird almost always advances toward its opponent.

Beginning to calm a little 12:10.

Still too panicky to watch 12:22.

Hunched posture. Presumably pre-FB. Very long and slim. Big-headed.

Shape of crest in some U postures Definite alarm element.
