Ring-bill, May 10, 1955, VIII It is sometimes prolonged and conspicuous on P, U and Ch, at least. I am by no means sure, however, that it is ritualized or a "real" component of the display (i.e. effective). Bob coming 8:35. May 11, 1955 Arrive Pelican Island 12:30 appr. Hot. Clear Little wind. Blind moved. Looking for californicus Notice one [[female symbol]] Ring-bill standing beside [[male symbol]]. [[male symbol]] giving Cop. Call. [[female symbol]] dashes off to attack neighbor, looked like a good case of redirection. [[female symbol]] back T twice. Ring-bill's give same "anxiety" LCN to California Gulls. Ring-bills seem to threaten Californias as if they were particularly intimidating and irritating Ring-bills. Ch & P with R for instance. R seems to be high intensity, possibly on the anxiety side. Associated with very wide holding out of carpal joints. Copulation Call seems to have faster rhythm than Choking. M seems to differ from PCC only in being more muffled. Perhaps more plaintive. Bill closed. Eye not necessarily shut. Definite L or head to ground. P and PAG certainly closely linked. P easily develops into PAG or PAP.
