Franklin's Gull 1955
Captive Chicks

RED-HEAD (RH) Hatched 7:00 a.m (approximately) June 23.
BLUE-HEAD (BH) Hatched 6:00 p.m. (approximately) June 23.
NO COLOR (NC) Hatched 9:00 p.m. (approximately) June 24.

Haven't been watching their behavior very carefully.
Recorded chicks before hatching, day after hatching, and on July 2nd (NC was the bird recorded on this latter date)

10-11th day JULY 4: At the moment they seem to have 3 patterns, or 3 complexes of patterns. "High intensity distress call", still occurs when they are "uncomfortable," mishandled, "upset", when I approach when they're hungry. From "Erect" posture (as in my drawing. "Low intensity distress call" or "whistle" or "contentment note", (the latter according to Collins). In same situations as the "high intensity Distress Call"; but obviously a pattern of lower intensity. Then, and most interesting, "the harsh, rhythmic, staccato call", like very harsh, short, rapidly repeated "high intensity Distress Calls," given from head-down posture.

This last call, which is still reminiscent of Gabbering (I shall call is "Juv. Glik") was first noted (in NC) around June 30th. It hasn't changed yet. (None of their scapular feathers are out yet, so I can't tell if they are being raised)

Might note that, occasionally, a few Juv Glik sounds may be given from an "Erect" posture.

15th-16th JULY 9 Not much new. Voices are perhaps getting a little "clearer," but progress in this direction is slow.

Birds occasionally greet me with slight indication of HB, (sometimes almost Bowing), and high intensity D.C.
