Larus VII

July 27th

Bimbo (Herring Gull) beginning to show R. Once, after being pecked by a Franklin's, in L (short neck), very marked. Other times less marked. In no ritualized posture. Sometimes very briefly after attacking some other bird.

All the new gulls are beginning to find their voices, but I haven't been able to follow this very well. BT gives FB (very faint) quite often. Bimbo has given a typical D.C. Several others have given typical DC's. (all the Ringbills I think) when attacked.

Both BT and Willie often "Klioo" with T with R. Presumably "FB".

I am now having difficulty in distinguishing between the series of "Kliooo"s uttered by Willie in a more or less L posture and the individual "Kliooo"s which seem to be part of FB now. Former, however, is a series and the individual notes are more emphatic (perhaps more sharply "cut-off" at the end, probably louder on the average)

Watch two of the Ring-bills at zoo. Don't recognize me.
Very little hostile - even when fighting over food.
Occasional "haa" or "hlioo" note. LCN in fact. Some pretty clear. Others quavering (sound very "young")
Occasional, perhaps, slight trace of R after attack. Very frequently and brief if that.
