Franklin's July 21, 1955
I

Arrive blind 2:40. Unbelievably hot. No wind. Clear. Thunder "heads" coming up. Most young apparently flying.

One young bird flying around in perfectly typical "relaxed" posture, neck retracted. Uttering h.i. D.C. notes (quite average) as it flies. Not organized into any elaborate call.

No young showing any signs of coming back 2:48, although the colony seems to have settled.

Perhaps the area has been completely abandoned. (That is, inside the nests; there were young on the outskirts of the colony as we came in.

Some young in distance, pre-flight stage.

One back, apparently flew in and landed.

Young very shy, in alarm posture.

Now, 2:55, several young about.

One young lands, with series of h.i. D.C. notes, approx. uniform in pitch and length.

Non-flying young back. First Bowing with hi D.C., then Bowing with whistle, then FB with whistle from H, (all this toward adult).

One young attacks intruding young with juv. Glik sounds, otherwise "pure" attack movements. Intruder leaves. Defender then continues Juv Glk sounds in usual head-down hunch (HDH) posture with R. Joined by sibling who does repeated Bowing with hi D.C. notes & R.

Again & again seen young birds flying with h.i. D.C. notes. These are obviously juvenile aerial LCN's.

Storm coming up. Getting much cooler 3:06
