Franklin's IV

Put GR2 in pen with Joe. Poor GR2 repeatedly pecked by Joe (see other account). GR2 responds by long series of Rasps. At first with slight head bobbing, then without. Once or twice tries to grasp Joe's bill. Commotion quickly subsides.

Trying to provoke contentment "kliooos" or whistles on my medium age group (all except GR2 and X). Little difficult. But it is obvious that if I go into their pen, without food, they (?) up to me with repeated Rasps. This gradually changes into notes intermediate between Rasp and FB whistle - and then into the whistle itself - at least in some cases.

Both oldest and youngest medium age birds seem to have the high intensity D.C. still. Much less obviously syllabic than before.

2:15 p.m. Have let all the gulls except Joe and GR2 together. Haven't found one another yet. Too hot for them to be active.

RR and YS fighting. RR aggressor. Usual "haaa" sounds and postures. YS, the victim, head-down posture.

RS giving series of short "haa" notes. Beginning of AC?

Smaller Franklin's meet X. Fight. X aggressor. All "haaa" notes. Largely head-down. No real bowing

X chases duckling. Wings raised, neck forward, bill open as in P of Ring-bill. Two very brief "haa" like notes. Again & again later, usually without sound.

Y.S. does threat during feeding. Usual call. Posture with wings out and drooping. Most conspicuous.
