Rhamphocelus, Jan. 30, 1958, V

It also seems to lack a real R, (although the MCN's might approximate an R if they were greatly speeded up).

Rhamphocelus, I

February 21, 1958
Barro Colorado

I have now got a [[female symbol]] Sangre de Toro, banded black left, which I have let loose in the aviary.

There wasn't too much reaction by the [[male symbol]]. He has chased the [[female symbol]] very briefly from time to time, but she has fought back when ever he has come too close (without display - except, perhaps, for some muffled version of CN's, MCN's, or WGN's - see below) I would say, in fact, that the [[female symbol]] is probably more dominant than the [[male symbol]].

When the [[male symbol]] does land close to the [[female symbol]], however, he does begin to display! Goes into posture more or less comme ca:

rump very conspicuous

(With considerable variations. Sometimes wings almost crossed over the base of the tail. Sometimes body more nearly horizontal and tail less raised). Chin up and tail spread. I shall call this St. Sometimes quite silent. Sometimes accompanied by what I shall call Wh Notes, always a series. These are obviously "muffled" CN's of one sort or another. Usually accompanied by very slight opening & closing of the bill. The number of notes in a series varies considerably. Always (I think) at least 3.
