Rhamphocelus, Oct. 25, 1958, II

in and resting on the shoulders, and upper back feathers slightly fluffed). When he does start to move around, however, he does go down into the breast-low posture so typical of the other Rhamphocelus tanagers, and performs their typical extreme TF [[image]] (also a little WF, but not very conspicuous.)

This bird was got by the zoo at the same time as the Y Orange-rump, and the 2 birds apparently acted as if they were mated at first. Feeding one another (from the food tray - not regurgitation.)

The Black-throat still tends to "answer" the Y Orange-rump when the latter is vocal (when Y is giving "Tsit"s and/or R, and/or possibly the "Auh" CN's). The Black-throat always seems to answer by giving one or more single "Tsit"s!! Sound quite like those of the Orange-rump, but even louder, harder, more metallic-sounding.

As far as I can tell, this bird has absolutely no "Auh" CN's. Even more "primitive" than the Orange-rump???

Well! Well! Y flew down near this Black-throat, whereupon the Black-throat gave several little bursts of R & "Tsit" Notes!!! Sounded absolutely like the corresponding performance of the Orange-rump, ("Tsit"s occurring either before and/or after the R) - so much so that I couldn't tell them apart by sound alone. Bill open, with lower mandible vibrating during R. Otherwise no ritualized postures or movements - although the bird did "lean" forward toward R to some extent
