Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]], I

September 1, 1959
Bronx Zoo

Watching the same pair of Silver-bills here, in the same cage, as last year.

The male is rather more vocal than he was when I watched him last year. Uttering both "Trit" and "Wheeet" CN's, just like the wild birds at Iquitos.

For a while this morning the male sat by himself, in a rather hunched diagonal posture,, and uttered quite a lot of notes more or less one right after the other. Eventually a series of "Treeet" or "Wheeet" notes, soft and wheezing — considerably softer than the usual "Wheeet" CN's. Notes usual single (within the series), occasionally double [[image]]. I thought that this might have been a type of song, probably closely related to the DWS I heard at Iquitos (see December 24, 1958, p. 49).

Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]], I
September 21, 1959
London Zoo

There is a single Brazilian Scarlet Tanager (bresilius = [[orange crosshatching with purple diaonal lines striking through]]). In a small cage by itself. Probably male.

It's general behavior (movements, etc.) is apparently identical with that of the other Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]] tanagers of the "Sangre de Toro" group.

It seems to have two types of CN. One might be transcribed as "Chuck" or "Chirp". The other might be transcribed as "Wheee"
