Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]], Mar. 25, 1961 II

with typical Begging Notes. All the HAC Notes of the fledglings uttered with the bill wide open, and kept open between successive notes when the notes were repeated rapidly. This is also true of typical Begging Notes. Sometimes, but not always, the fledglings also lifted their heads up, vertically, as in Begging, when they uttered the HAC Notes.

It is obvious, I think, that the HAC and Begging patterns of these young birds were not yet fully differentiated at the time I handled the birds.

Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]], I

March 26, 1961
Barro Colorado

This morning, around 8:00 a.m., I noticed a solitary adult male Sangre sitting near the top of a tall dead tree. In an ordinary unritualized sitting posture, wings resting on rump. Constantly uttered a distinctive "song" phrase. Comme ça:

"Tsee-hee tsuh- weeeee"

This was obviously a real DWS. Most of these DWS's were uttered in response to ACN's of an adult female or juvenile about 500 yards away in low shrubbery. Usually in alternation with the ACN's. The female or juvenile would utter one ACN, the adult male would utter one DWS, the female or juvenile would utter another ACN, the adult male would utter another DWS, etc. etc. etc.

The male kept his bill absolutely closed throughout all his DWS's. He eventually flew off and disappeared without doing anything
