Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]], I

June 15, 1961
Barro Colorado

I have had my male and my females Sangres separated for well over a month. Until this morning, when I put them together again 6:00 a.m. The female had been left in her old cage, and this morning I put the male back with her.

Not much display at first. Male took several minutes to recover from the exertions of being caught.

No PCN's or ACN's except for a few ACN's uttered by the male when I cam close to the cage.

Then both birds started to fly about a little. Usually not together. Male sometimes does brief St when the female comes particularly close to him. Also once a brief indication of a rather low, forward, fluffed posture. One or both birds sometimes utter(s) MCN's when they come close together. Without ritualized postures or movements.

Two types of MCN's. Soft. "Waah whaah whaah...." or "Wheeaah wheeah...." notes. Harder briefer more staccato notes (almost R-like).

Burst of the soft MCN's when male & female land together, both going into low forward posture, without fluffing.
