Rhamphocelus [[Ramphocelus]], June 15, 1961, II

I think that the usual brief low intensity burst of soft MCN's is really usually like "Zhawee whauh" or "ahawee whauh whah"

Quite nasal & hoarse.

Now, 6:30, the birds are starting to utter a few of both ACN's and PCN's as they fly about the cage undisturbed.

Female perches on nearby vertical branch. Male sidles up branch toward her. Peering into her face. Then their bills almost touch (does the male feed the female?). Then the male hops straight onto the back of the female!!! One or both birds utters a little soft, rapid, MCN. Male starts to cop immediately. Then male flies away immediately. Cop obviously unsuccessful. (This whole procedure was very rapid and brief!) 6:40.

Female on perch, male feeding below, when female suddenly goes into soliciting posture. Comme ça:

Wings out, but absolutely no Q.

The male flies up,lands on perch a foot or so from female. Hops to her, pivoting as he hops.

The arrows represent the bird. The head of the arrows indicate the head of the bird.
