Rhamphocelus, June 16, 1961, IV..

Things very dull among the Sangres now, 7:00 a.m. Male just sitting silently, in fluffed posture.

I have also had my male & female Yellow-rumps separated for over a month now. In adjacent cages where they could see one another (and even touch one another). I opened the door between their cages this morning at 7:05. But the birds don't seem to be able to find their way through the door!

Both birds are very shy. Reacting to me instead of to each other. Male uttering ACN's. Female silent.

When the 2 birds finally do get together, there is almost no display. One brief burst of MCN or HAC, once, when the female flies to, and joins the male. That is all.

An occasional ACN from time to time during the next half hour.

A silent pecking dispute between the male & female Yellow-rumps at 7:45.

I can still hear the male Sangre uttering a little "Keeyoo" song at 7:50. Quite brief.

Leaving myself 8:00 a.m.

These seem to occur during both purely hostile encounters and encounters between mates or potential mates. They seem to be the usual "greeting" notes between mates. I shall call them "WhMCN"s from now on.

Second, the more or less staccato notes. There are probably the first
