Ramphocelus, Jan. 30, 1962, II

Male back again 7:12. Alone. Why aren't the sexes associating today? Male has been quite silent both times. I have seen him this morning.

Stopping observation 7:30.

I presume that the behavior of the birds this morning was typical of the non-breeding season! Or the birds are already nesting!!!

The pair of Yellow rumps around my house are much less vocal than they were when they first arrived months ago. But don't seem to have a nest yet. I have made some rather casual observations of them at various times during the last week or so.

I walked around during the early morning of Feb. 4, hoping to see something like Dawn Calling by the Yellow rumps. Disappointed. The birds didn't appear until well after sunrise. And then the male and female showed up separately. Each remained for only a few seconds, then disappeared, returned again, disappeared again, etc. etc. Often the visits of the male and female were not synchronized.

The male was first seen sitting on a perch, alone. Uttering PN's and NN's. In rather variable arrangement. Usually 3 or 4 notes of one type, then 3 or 4 notes of the other type, then 3 or 4 notes of the first type again. He was sitting in an ordinary posture while uttering these notes. Preening between notes.

Once, in the middle of this performance, he utters PN- "Yah"
