Ramphocelus, Feb. 8, 1962, II           

This "Yah" was the same as the note frequently occurring at the end of Ф's. It is definitely slightly different from an NN.

On Feb. 6, I watched the male sitting alone at 7:25. Uttering PN's comme ça: [[image]] (I have also heard this before, on other days. Often followed, eventually by one or more Ф's. Sign of declining or increasing intensity ????)

Later in the morning, the male uttered a jumble of NN's, PN's, and occasional Ф's, when well separated from the female.

Watching Yellow-rumps in the same areas as before. This morning, from before dawn, and this afternoon. Their behavior has not changed an awful lot since January, altho I think they are probably coming into breeding condition. More vocal than in January, but uttering the same types of calls.

The first definite Yellow-rump sounds heard this morning were NN's at 6:30 a.m  Followed by Ф's and a few PN's (possibly also TssN's.)

I am becoming more and more convinced that PN's and TssN's are nothing more than extremes of a single pattern.

Some time after the beginning of vocalization, I heard an apparently solitary male uttering indeterminate series of Tss Notes on several different perches.  Unfortunately I couldn't see the bird well.  At least once, it uttered a Ф in flight between perches on which it
