Ramphocelus, Feb. 19, 1962, II

apart. My notes above include references to both. (I will try to sort them out later. Call them "I" and "II" now.

Sudden burst of accelerated Ф or ФR's in distance. Presumably several birds come together 7:00 a.m. The "vibrations" of these R's definitely closer together than usual when single Ф's or ФR's performances, where many calls are uttered close together. It adds to the [[image]] effect of their performances, and increases their resemblance to the HAC patterns of other species.

Everything pretty quite now 7:07.

Male I utters medley harsh PN's, Ф's, and a few TssN's sitting a few feet away from a female or juv. Another female or juv further away in same tree. Male sitting with back fluffed, wings slightly drooped. Make a few preening movements between calls. Doesn't induce any overt response. Birds eventually move off. 7:30.

One female or juv flies to another female or juv. Approaching bird has food in bill. Utters soft ФR as it flies to the other. Then apparently tries to feed the other. The latter does not beg, but probably takes food.

This soft ФR was probably also accelerated. I think that almost all accelerated [[image]] R patterns are also relatively soft. Softer than typical single ФR's.

Group of 3 females and/or juvs moving thru bushes. Feeding. Seem to utter soft ФR's as "greeting" almost every time one lands beside the other. 7:50.

Adult male flies to female or juv. Lands a few feet away. Utters soft accelerated ФR's just as he lands. Then stands with wings drooped, back fluffed. Silent. Facing female or juv (she probably can't see his back)
